여기 당신의 여름이 있다 청량한 사운드의 인디록, 전기뱀장어 정규 2집 [Fluke]

배경에 적당히 들어맞는 음악을 우리는 흔히 BGM이라고 부른다. 그리고 반대로, (흔하지는 않지만) 플레이 하는 순간 장면을 만들어내는 음악도 있다. 전기뱀장어의 새 앨범에 수록된 열두 곡의 힘은 바로 여기에 있다. 곡이 가진 고유의 온도와 가사로 전달되는 특별한 감성은 청취자가 어디에 있건, 때론 시원한 여름 바다로 때로는 먹먹한 골목길로 강제 소환한다. 굳이 이름을 붙여 보자면 BGM보다는 씬 메이커(Scene Maker)같은 음악이라고 할까.

생명력이 꿈틀거리는 여름의 낮과 밤. [Fluke]에는 당신이 만나는 여름의 모든 것이 담겨 있다. 눈부신 태양과 파도의 소리, 두근대는 연애담이 담겨 있고, 어둑해진 동네 어귀에서 혼자 참아내야 했던 막막함이 담겨있다. 청량한 사운드와 경쾌한 리듬이 여름 낮의 댄스라면 담백한 목소리와 풋풋한 가사는 여름 밤의 산책이다.

새 앨범 [Fluke]는 가히 전기뱀장어의 정수라고 할 수 있다. 기존에 발표한 적 없는 온전히 새로운 열두 곡으로 채운 이 앨범을 위해 50여 곡에 이르는 데모를 모았고, 최종 레코딩에 이르기까지 수 차례 편곡 작업을 거듭하면서 수록 곡을 선정하였다. 1집 발매 이후 4년 만에 발표하는 이 정규 앨범에는 밴드 전기뱀장어의 모든 것이 담겨있다고 얘기해도 틀린 말은 아닌 것 같다. 감히 얘기하자면, 쉽게 나오기 힘든 그런 앨범이다.

탁구를 컨셉으로 한 커버아트에서 네 멤버의 탁구채는 형형색색의 공을 쫓느라 바쁘다. 이리저리 튕기는 공들은 좌충우돌하는 우리 일상의 파노라마와 닮아있다. 공들과 함께 커버아트에 박혀있는 이 앨범의 제목은 요행이나 우연한 성공이라는 뜻을 지닌 단어 'Fluke'. 행복보다는 행운이 필요한 지금 시절에 대한 패러디인지 아니면 그냥 장난인지 알 수는 없지만, 탁구라는 컨셉과 묘하게 어우러지면서 재미를 준다. 진지한 행복론도 좋지만 때로는 크고 작은 일상들을 잘 헤쳐나가기 위한 행운을 서로에게 빌어주는 것도 좋은 것 같다. 새 앨범을 발표하는 전기뱀장어에게도, [Fluke]를 듣는 모든 이들에게도 행운이 있기를.

"적도" 의 마지막 마무리 기타연주는 Weezer - Buddy Holly의 기타리프를 오마주로 연주하였음을 밝힙니다.
