Cha Jun-hwan Takes a Break from Competitive Skating: 'Exploring New Horizons'

South Korean figure skating sensation Cha Jun-hwan has announced he will step away from national team duties and competitive events this season, according to MHN reporter Kim So-young.

On August 12th, Cha took to social media to share his decision. "After much soul-searching following last season, I've decided to take a hiatus from national team activities and competitions," he wrote.

Cha also revealed that he has ended his contract with Seoul City Hall, stating, "After thorough discussions with city officials, we've mutually agreed to part ways. I'm deeply grateful for their unwavering support over the years."

"While I focus on my current commitments, I'll be carefully considering my next steps," Cha added. "I'm eternally thankful for everyone's encouragement. I look forward to sharing positive news with you all in the future."

In February, Cha narrowly missed the podium at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, finishing fourth in men's singles—the highest placement ever for a South Korean male figure skater. Despite falling short of a medal by a mere 0.98 points, his performance was widely acclaimed.

Following the Olympics, Cha dismissed retirement rumors, insisting he never referred to his performance as a "last dance." He sat out the World Championships in March due to injury. While he had received invitations to two ISU Grand Prix events for the 2026-2027 season, his return to competitive skating is now on hold.

Cha's illustrious career includes a silver medal at the 2023 World Championships and appearances at the 2025 Harbin Winter Asian Games. In April, he signed with entertainment agency Fantagio, signaling a potential pivot to entertainment. The former child actor is considering a role in the upcoming tvN sitcom 'Palace Land' and recently appeared in singer Roy Kim's 'Sparkle' music video, showcasing his acting chops alongside actress Seo Soo-min.
